David's Personal Journey

Our daily lives reflect the same quality whether we are in the bank or the supermarket, whether we are in prayer or in listening to a brother's woes.

David began his journey to spiritual enlightenment in 1986 when he encountered A Course in Miracles and recognized it as the tool he had been seeking for a radical transformation of his mind and perceptions. In the early years David studied the Course with passionate intensity, often reading it for eight or more hours a day. After two years of this study, David began to seek the company of other students of ACIM, attending as many as five groups a week. He was startled to find that a Voice was speaking through him with great authority, so that many began referring their questions to him.

Among family members, friends and teachers, David was always known for questioning everything, rather than accepting conventional answers. Thus he was delighted to find in the Course support and encouragement from the Voice of Jesus for his careful examination of every idea, belief, concept and assumption in his mind. Jesus became David's internal teacher, answering his every question, guiding him to hand over the day-to-day management of all relationships, circumstances and events in his life, and providing inner discernment.

Leap of Trust

In 1991 David was impelled to make another leap of trust and to begin traveling around the United States and Canada, sharing his clarity of understanding related to A Course in Miracles. He followed Jesus' instructions to "become as a child", allowing himself to be totally dependent on the Holy Spirit for money, transportation, shelter, food and the words to speak in countless ACIM gatherings, churches, metaphysical and spiritual groups and a host of holy encounters with persons who knew nothing of the Course. David found that it was his constant joy and peace that was the best teacher in all encounters, and that it was this peace that all his brothers and sisters were seeking. The Voice of Jesus told David - as it instructed the apostles 2,000 years before, "Freely you have received; freely give." Thus David has never charged for his time, teaching or any of the many materials he gives away, but has been supported entirely by love offerings.

In all his years of traveling and sharing the wisdom of Christ, David has become a living demonstration of the principles of A Course in Miracles, such lessons as:

"I am sustained by the Love of God."
"I am the light of the world."
"I will step back and let Him lead the way."
"In my defenselessness my safety lies."
"God's Will for me is perfect happiness."

David learned through countless miracles that he could perfectly trust the Holy Spirit to provide for him and guide him through every situation. Everything he seemed to need to accomplish his purpose as a teacher of God was given without his making any effort whatever. Several hermitage experiences helped David to free his mind from ego chatter and enter into deep Silence, where he ultimately experienced Enlightenment.

Foundation for the Awakening Mind

David was guided to a small house in 1996. It became a place of quiet and meditation between travels, but also a place where he could welcome those desiring to step back from the world and to go deeply within the mind to discover the Christ within. David's time at the PeaceHouse opened a new phase of his ministry as Holy Spirit guided him to acquire computers and use internet technology. The result was the making of a number of websites.

His main website, Foundation for the Awakening Mind, today offers a huge array of resources related to A Course in Miracles and the metaphysics of Christ. Spiritual truth-seekers can subscribe to David's e-group, Awakeninginchrist, where for several years he answered the questions sent in to him from all over the world. This online group now serves as a global mailing list to announce foundation events and new resources as well as David's travel schedule.

Other Interests and Activities

Always a lover of music, and seeing it as a path to God in its own right, David has set up a number of Music Pavilions on his website highlighting a variety of artists who share spiritual ideas through music. Also available on the site are video clips of television interviews he has done, audio recordings of gatherings and teaching sessions, searchable archives, and writings such as Mind Overhaul, Purpose Is The Only Choice, and The Movie Watcher's Guide To Enlightenment. (David sees movies as another helpful path to God.)

While the computer ministry was unfolding a friend was inspired to establish a non-profit organization, the Foundation For The Awakening Mind, which now serves as a framework for coordinating all aspects of the ministry and for handling larger donations. All donations help David continue to share the experience of:

Christ's Divine Love or Perfect Oneness

All Glory to God

All Glory to God and thanks be to Jesus & the Holy Spirit for Answering the prayers of everyone.

David extends the experience that can be reached through Atonement / Correction in the Name of God and for the Glory of God. Separate interests are laid aside when the devotion to forgiveness and joining is desired above all else. "Seek and ye shall find" and "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free" are statements of destiny. All of the streams and rivers of consciousness must eventually arrive at the Ocean of Self in God!

The time has come to awaken from the dream of fear and guilt. David lives the experience of A Course in Miracles ACIM, and has discovered that A Course in Miracles ACIM is a clear, direct path to God. The time for words and concepts is almost over. Now we seek direct experience of the Love of God. We gladly lay aside techniques and repetitions and rituals, that we may come to experience the still Reality within. We claim the Peace and Happiness and Love that is our Inheritance, and we come with empty hands and open arms to receive and give the blessed miracles given us to share.

As we look around we see that mighty companions have gathered beside us for this joyous ascent to the Kingdom of Heaven. A friend's a friend forever in the Spirit of Love. The welcome never ends, for those who walk this Way see their brothers and sisters as themselves. The Holy Relationship has at last come into awareness, blessing everyone and everything. The blanket of peace has spread across the face of the earth. Tranquility and Grace are accepted! Thank you Jesus for sharing A Course in Miracles (ACIM) with everyone.

There is nothing left to do but celebrate, rejoice, bless, and remember to laugh at the falsity we once took so seriously. All the trinkets of the world that once caught our eyes and ears are valueless before the vastness of this present experience. All ambition and striving for future goals has vanished, replaced by the contentedness of life in God. All curiosity about the world and its ways has ended. All things work together for good, and acceptance of healing has replaced the insane desire to exchange or control the world of illusions. Illusions having been unveiled, now the Silence of our Heart calls to us.

Prayer is the medium of staying in Connection, in Communion, and we pray unceasingly. If you wish to contact us by phone, letter, e-mail, at the door, or in thought, please know that we would love to hear from you! We travel from time to time and always enjoy receiving visitors.

David Hoffmeister

David Hoffmeister is a surprise. The best kind of surprise. Here's how the surprise works. If, for example, your very first contact with David is by phone, you notice right away that his phone voice has a youthful, earnest quality. But then when you meet David in person you discover he's closer to 50 than to 30. Then there's the fact that David has the unique ability to express serious topics in a light way, without any melodrama or heaviness. So again, it's a surprise when you meet him in person and discover that he's much taller and more mesomorphic than his lightness suggests. But mostly, it's David's dedication to a nomadic lifestyle as roaming ambassador of the Course that is so very unusual and intriguing.

David's Gatherings

David currently conducts informal gatherings for A Course In Miracles practitioners and spiritual seekers all over the world. It all started back in 1991. "I began to be impelled by the Holy Spirit to travel throughout the United States and Canada, just to let the Voice for God speak through me. I would get prompts to call people. I would go to ACIM groups and people would give me little strips of paper with contact information and say please go visit so and so. Invitations started coming spontaneously. So I just went where prompted."

"Those that show up in my gatherings, are showing up calling for help."
David points out that his gatherings are more a state of mind than anything else. "As I go to the gatherings I have the willingness to show up in mind and to be truly helpful. I have no agenda. No clue what will be asked or if there will even be talking or not. Instead, I make myself available to answer questions and to facilitate the expression of the Holy Spirit, which comes through many people, not just myself. People come from so many different backgrounds, cultures and languages. Sometimes I don't even speak the language. But translators show up, and it seems like the Holy Spirit is orchestrating the whole thing just for me to share this state of joy and peace and happiness. I'm there to join with everyone."

"Those that show up in my gatherings, are showing up calling for help." It's typical for David to be asked to address worldly concerns. Maybe the questions have to do with the dropping of bombs, or anti-American protests, or betrayal, or loss. David offers healing to all.

"In Argentina there is a perception that the economy has collapsed, the children are struggling and dying, the politicians and police are corrupt. There are no stop signs in Argentina, so every intersection is a telepathic encounter. In this setting, when I was speaking the Voice for the Holy Spirit, people were crying. All of the discussions were not intellectual, but you could feel the healing going on. This is typical of all my gatherings. Another gathering in Massachusetts was no different than that. People came. They poured out their hurts and grief about the loss of loved ones, about children in drug rehab, about sickness, about panic attacks, and fear of the future. So I would say that the Holy Spirit is extremely practical and meets every questioner with what could be most helpful. There is no formula. And there is no set answer that can be given across the board because people's consciousness and awareness have such a range. But when I'm showing up, I truly show up to be only helpful. And the Spirit flows through me. And I experience joy and so does everyone else in the room. So typically, by the end of the gathering there are lots of hugs and kisses. Sometimes tears. And always a feeling of lightness and joy."

"Every encounter I have is a chance to get to know me in the truest sense. What I am always teaching is that there are no private thoughts and no private minds. So the experience that I have when we gather together is of our sameness. That we share the same Spirit. This is a feeling more than a group of concepts. It's still always an adventure for me to meet myself over and over in many delightful ways. I like the spontaneity of the encounters. I like the sense of innocence that we experience together. I always share in gatherings that there is nothing off limits. This offers a sense of openness that enables everyone to express whatever they're feeling in the moment. This is how we know ourselves. We take the lid off all our feelings and emotions. We bare our soul, and we realize we are not judged for baring our soul. People who I've met along the way feel like they can talk to me and unburden their soul no matter how shameful they feel about it. Someone could come to me and claim to be a mass murderer, and I would look at them the same way as I would look at an ACIM student. Because we are all innocent, and it feels good to be innocent."

Enlightenment

David sees both Jesus and ACIM as symbols of Enlightenment or Awakening. "Enlightenment is to know thy Self. It's a State of Mind that never deviates. It does not dip into unhappiness. There is no sorrow with it. There is no pain with it. It is natural. It is present. It has let go of regrets of the past and of all concerns for the future. It is like watching a movie from a State of detachment, knowing that all things are working together for the good. It makes no demands. It has no agenda. It is very childlike. It has a childlike innocence, and it is untouched by errors and mistakes. It is very simple. Many people are always reflecting back to me that I have a childlike sense of wonder. I can look on things with a sense of peace and openness. In terms of practicality, the Holy Spirit gives me what I am to say, where I am to go, and what I am to do. Everything is given to me, and there is nothing to get. So I have no desire to get anything from anyone. And I can see everyone as mySelf. Enlightenment sees no gap. Sees no differences that are meaningful. Enlightenment still looks on the world and sees the world, but makes no attempt to judge that world, and this is what makes it a happy dream rather than what it seemed to be before."

Beyond Practice and Ritual

"There's no standard day for me. Every day is spontaneous. I feel as if I'm in a State of constant meditation. Practices and rituals have fallen away. I feel as if I'm in a constant State of prayer. There are no prayers for specific instances and events because prayers are included in the constant State that I am. It's staying in a State of joy, and I let that direct my day. Except for resting the body at night and watching the body during the day, there's nothing that's regular in my life. I've even let go of the distinction between sleeping dreams and waking dreams because the Holy Spirit has said really they're all the same. I just use my stories and parables to be helpful to my brothers and sisters who I see as one with me."

"It's the desire to know God that's the most important thing. It's important to follow the rituals to train your mind, but this need not take many years. I always tell people when they're doing the ACIM Workbook to approach each lesson as if it's their final lesson. With such passion that they expect to wake up during that lesson. My approach is based on willingness and passion and not on on frequency of reading the Course or repeatedly doing the lessons year after year."

Desire

"I have drawn a map of the mind, and desire is in the middle. Desire is our altar. Desire is our prayer. Outside of desire is the ring of belief. And this entire cosmos seems to arise from this belief, the belief that it's possible to separate from God. Outside the ring of belief is the ring of thought, and all thoughts arise from one of two belief systems: the ego's and the Holy Spirit's. Outside the ring of thought is the ring of emotion, and there are but two emotions: love and fear. And then we have what we call the perceptual world. And that arises from the emotions we hold and the thoughts we think and the beliefs that guide them. Why did this happen to me? I was able to get to the core, which is the source of all. And I remember a quote from ACIM, which always touched my heart: truth will be returned to your awareness by your desire as it was lost by your desire for something else. When I first read that quote, I knew that I must let my eye be single and come to a single desire, and that everything else would fall into place once I had cleared the altar of my mind."

Gratitude

"I think as we live in a State of gratitude we remember who we are. Everything that happens is a reflection of our mind, and it feels like my life is a song of gratitude. I'm grateful for miracles. I'm grateful for everything that shows up. Still feeling completely humbled by this glorious Creator that we have to provide such happiness and joy. If I could share just one message, it's that you don't have to give up anything to be Who You are. The ego was the belief in sacrifice. The ego tried to distort the message of Jesus with sacrifice and punishment and penance. But these are not the teachings of our master. The things that seem to require investment in this world are illusions. And there really is no sacrifice in giving up an illusion once you see it for what it is. The pleasures of the world are very transitory. They come and they go. That is the same with pains. They come and they go. But we have a Purpose that brings stability to the mind. That fulfills us. That shows us we are not lacking, and never have been lacking. This is what I appreciate about Christ and ACIM."
